Best colors for pale skin chart: swatches for cool, warm and muted fair skin, plus colors that wash pale skin out
In this guide14 sections

Pale skin is not one color type. A porcelain skin with black hair, a peachy skin with strawberry blonde hair and a pink-beige skin with ash blonde hair all count as "pale", and their best colors barely overlap. What decides your colors is not how light your skin is, it's three other things:

  1. Undertone: is the warmth under your skin pink and cool, peachy and golden, or somewhere in between?
  2. Contrast: how different your hair and eyes are from your skin. Pale skin with dark hair is high contrast; pale skin with light hair is low contrast.
  3. Chroma: do you look best in clear, bright colors or in soft, slightly greyed ones?

Get those three right and the list of flattering colors writes itself. This guide walks through each pale skin type with swatches taken from our 12-season palettes.

Quick answer: the best colors for pale skin

Your pale skin typeBest colorsUsually lands in
Pink or rosy undertone, light ash hair, soft eyesPowder blue, rose pink, periwinkle, lavender, slate navyLight Summer, True Summer
Cool porcelain skin, dark brown or black hairPure white, black, true red, emerald, royal blue, icy pastelsTrue Winter, Bright Winter, Deep Winter
Peachy or golden undertone, golden or strawberry blonde hairPeach, coral pink, light turquoise, warm ivory, light camelLight Spring, True Spring
Ivory skin with freckles and copper or auburn hairCream, camel, olive, rust, warm teal, mossTrue Autumn, True Spring
Neutral, slightly greyed or olive-tinged fair skin, ashy hairDusty rose, soft teal, mauve, sage, denim, oysterSoft Summer, Soft Autumn

The one rule that holds for almost every pale skin: match the intensity of the color to the intensity of your coloring. Light, low contrast coloring needs lighter, gentler colors. Pale skin with very dark hair can take strong contrast that would swamp a pale blonde.

Step 1: find your pale skin undertone

Pale skin shows undertone more clearly than any other skin depth, which is the good news. The bad news is that many fair people flush easily, and redness on the cheeks gets mistaken for a cool undertone.

Tests that work, in daylight with a bare face:

  • White vs cream. Hold a pure white T-shirt, then a cream one, under your chin. If white makes you look fresh and cream makes you look yellow, you're cool. If white looks harsh and cream looks soft and healthy, you're warm.
  • Silver vs gold. Silver that brightens you points to cool; gold that warms you up without looking brassy points to warm. Our gold or silver test shows both on your photo.
  • Look at your jawline, not your cheeks. Cheeks redden; the side of the jaw and the neck show the base undertone better.

Tests that mislead: the vein test (vein color depends on skin thickness and light more than undertone) and "I burn, so I'm cool" (almost every pale person burns). If you're still unsure, the undertone test measures it from a selfie.

Pale skin with pink undertones causes the most confusion, because pink cheeks alone don't make you cool. If your skin is pink but gold jewelry and cream look better than silver and white, you're warm with redness, which is a classic Light Spring or True Spring trait.

Step 2: check your contrast

Contrast is what separates a pale Light Summer from a pale True Winter, even when both have cool skin.

  • Low contrast: hair within a few shades of your skin (blonde, light ash brown, strawberry blonde). You look best in light to medium colors worn close together.
  • High contrast: dark brown or black hair against pale skin. You need some darkness and some brightness in an outfit, or you look washed out.

A quick test: take a black and white photo of your face with your hair down. If it reads as mostly the same grey, you're low contrast. If your hair is a dark block against a light face, you're high contrast. The contrast test does this measurement for you.

Best colors for pale skin with cool undertones and light hair

This is the classic "fair and rosy" type: pink-beige skin, ash blonde or light ash brown hair, blue, grey-blue or grey-green eyes. Most people with this coloring test as Light Summer or True Summer.

What to buy:

  • Slate navy, greyed navy and blue grey instead of black. Black is the single most common mistake for this type. It looks heavy next to light hair and puts shadows under the eyes.
  • Blue-based pinks: rose pink, raspberry, watermelon. They pick up the natural flush in your cheeks and make it look intentional.
  • Cool, clear pastels: powder blue, lavender, seafoam. They look fresh on you where they look sweet on darker coloring.
  • Soft white rather than optic white or cream.

Best colors for pale skin and dark hair

Porcelain or cool beige skin, dark brown to black hair, often very clear eyes. This is the high contrast pale type, and it's the one that can wear black and white together better than anyone.

Which winter you are depends on the rest of your coloring:

  • True Winter: cool first. Pure white, black, true red, royal blue and emerald.
  • Bright Winter: clear first, with very bright eyes. The same colors at full saturation: electric blue, hot pink, emerald.
  • Deep Winter: depth first, often with dark eyes. Ruby, pine green, aubergine and black brown look richer than icy brights.

What fails on this type: camel, oatmeal, beige, dusty rose and khaki. They match neither your skin nor your hair, so your face loses its definition. Wear them on the lower half if you love them, with a white or black top near the face.

Best colors for pale skin with warm undertones

Ivory or peach skin with a golden glow, golden or strawberry blonde to light golden brown hair, often light freckles. This type is often told to wear "pale skin colors" like black and jewel tones, and it's the worst advice it can get.

  • Light Spring is the lighter, softer version: peach, coral pink, light turquoise, buttery yellow, warm ivory.
  • True Spring is warmer and brighter: coral, tomato red, kelly green, warm aqua, golden yellow.
  • Swap black for light navy or warm navy, and swap grey for light camel or stone.

Here is the difference on a fair, light-haired face. Same light, same photo, only the color of the cape changes:

Best colors for pale skin with red hair and freckles

Ivory skin, freckles, copper or auburn hair. Redheads are usually warm, and the depth of the hair decides where they land: bright copper and strawberry tones often test True Spring, deeper auburn and chestnut often test True Autumn.

Green and teal are the redhead's best friends because they sit opposite red-orange on the color wheel and make the hair glow. Cool pinks, lavender and icy pastels do the opposite: they turn the freckles grey and the hair brassy.

Best colors for neutral or muted pale skin

Some fair skin is neither clearly pink nor clearly golden: beige with a soft olive or greyish cast, ashy hair, grey-green or soft hazel eyes. Bright colors look like they're wearing you. This is Soft Summer (cooler) or Soft Autumn (warmer) territory.

The trick for muted coloring is grey-tinted color: dusty rose instead of pink, denim instead of royal blue, sage instead of kelly green. They look "boring" on the hanger and expensive on you.

Colors that wash out pale skin

There is no color that fails on every pale skin, but there are four mistakes we see again and again:

MistakeWho it hurtsWhyWear instead
Beige, camel and oatmeal near the faceCool pale skin, especially with dark hairToo close to the skin and warmer than it, so the face loses its edges and looks sallowSoft white, grey, navy
BlackLight, low contrast pale skin (light hair, light eyes)Too heavy: it takes over and shadows the eyesSlate navy, charcoal blue, light navy
Neon and electric brightsSoft and light pale typesThe color arrives before you doThe same hue, softer: watermelon instead of hot pink
Icy pastels and silver greyWarm pale skin, red hairCool and chalky, they make warm skin look greyPeach, warm ivory, light aqua

Avoid colors don't have to leave your wardrobe. Trousers, skirts, shoes and bags sit far enough from your face that their effect is small. The color within about 20 cm of your face is the one that changes how your skin looks in person and on camera.

Try these colors on your own pale skin

Reading about undertones only goes so far. Put the colors next to your face and look at your skin, not the fabric: the right color evens out redness and makes your eyes clearer; the wrong one adds shadows, a grey cast or a yellow cast.

Makeup for pale skin

Foundation is where pale skin goes wrong most often, because the lightest shade in a range is usually designed for one undertone only.

Pale typeFoundationLips that work
Cool, light hair (Light Summer)Light, cool to neutral with a hint of pink; no yellow or orangeBallet pink, rose pink, watermelon, sheer berry
Cool, dark hair (True Winter)Cool or neutral-cool with a clean, not yellow, finish; match depth exactlyCool pink, fuchsia, raspberry, true red
Warm, light (Light Spring)Light peachy or golden beige; pink or ashy shades look chalkyPeach nude, coral pink, warm pink, apricot
Red hair (True Autumn)Golden, warm or olive-golden; pink bases look chalkyCaramel nude, burnt coral, terracotta, brick red
Muted (Soft Summer)Neutral-cool soft beige with a hint of rosePink nude, dusty rose, mauve, rosewood

Two habits help every pale skin: test foundation on the jaw in daylight, and choose a lip that adds a little color rather than a nude that matches your skin. A skin-colored lip on pale skin makes the whole face look unfinished.

Hair color for pale skin

Stay close to your natural undertone. Cool pale skin looks best with ash, beige or cool dark shades; warm pale skin with golden, honey or strawberry tones. The two classic mistakes are warm caramel highlights on cool pale skin (they turn the skin pink and ruddy) and very dark dye on light, low contrast coloring (it looks like a wig). Our guides to hair color for cool skin tones and natural blonde shades go deeper.

Silver or gold for pale skin?

Cool pale skin: silver, white gold and platinum. Warm pale skin: yellow gold, rose gold and champagne gold. Muted pale skin: brushed silver, pewter, rose gold or brushed gold, nothing too shiny. Our jewelry color guide has the full list per season.

Pale skin FAQ

Does red look good on pale skin?

Yes, if it's the right red. Cool pale skin suits blue reds like true red, rose red and raspberry. Warm pale skin suits coral, tomato red and poppy red. Light, low contrast pale skin does better with a lighter red such as watermelon than with a deep wine.

Does orange look good on pale skin?

On warm pale skin, yes: peach, apricot, coral and soft pumpkin shades look healthy. On cool pale skin, orange is one of the hardest colors and usually makes the skin look ruddy. Redheads often love rust and burnt orange.

Can pale skin wear black?

Pale skin with dark hair can, and often looks best in it. Pale skin with light hair and light eyes usually can't, at least not next to the face. Try slate navy or charcoal blue first.

What colors make pale skin look less pale?

Colors that add warmth or contrast without overpowering: peach and coral on warm skin, rose pink and raspberry on cool skin. Very dark colors and beige make pale skin look paler.

What colors look good on pale skin and blonde hair?

If your blonde is ash or beige: powder blue, rose pink, lavender, slate navy (Light Summer). If your blonde is golden or strawberry: peach, coral pink, light turquoise, warm ivory (Light Spring).

What colors look good on pale skin and dark hair?

High contrast colors: pure white, black, true red, emerald, royal blue and icy pastels. Skip camel, beige and dusty muted shades near your face.
