How to tell if gold or silver suits you
The best test is the direct one: real metal or metallic fabric next to your bare face, in daylight.
- Stand facing a window, no direct sun, no lamps. No makeup, or very little.
- Hold a gold piece and a silver piece (necklaces, a gold and a silver scarf, even kitchen foil vs a gold gift wrap) right under your chin, one at a time.
- Look at your skin, not the metal. The right one makes your skin look even and slightly brighter. The wrong one makes it look grey, sallow or blotchy, and the metal seems to sit on top of you.
- Take a photo of each in the same light and compare. Your eye adjusts in the mirror; photos don't.
Signs gold is your metal: skin looks warmer and healthier, any redness calms down, the gold looks like it belongs. Signs silver is your metal: skin looks clearer and fresher, the gold makes you look yellow or tired.
What about the vein test? Green veins for warm, blue for cool is the most repeated tip online, and the least reliable. Vein color depends on skin depth and lighting as much as undertone. Use it as a hint at most.

Three patterns worth noticing:
- Finish matters as much as color. Soft seasons want brushed, matte or antique finishes. Bright seasons want polished and shiny. A Soft Summer in mirror-polished chrome looks harsh; a Bright Winter in oxidized silver looks dull.
- Rose gold is the great in-between. It's a best or "works" metal for both Springs and Summers, and works for Soft Autumn and True Autumn too. If you're unsure, it's the safest first purchase.
- Neighbors share. Bright Spring and Bright Winter both wear polished metals of either color. Deep Autumn and Deep Winter can both use gunmetal.

True Autumn and True Winter are opposites: one wants antique gold and copper, the other silver and platinum. Soft Summer shows why finish matters: it's a cool season, yet chrome is on its skip list, because a mirror shine is too harsh for muted coloring.
Jewelry color by skin tone
Skin tone alone doesn't decide your metal, undertone does. But depth does change which version of a metal works best.
- Fair skin: delicate, lighter metals usually win. Cool fair skin looks fresh in silver, white gold and platinum (Light Summer, True Summer). Warm fair skin glows in yellow, rose and champagne gold (Light Spring).
- Medium skin: the widest choice. Check your undertone: golden and olive-beige skins often lean to brushed gold and bronze (Soft Autumn), pink-beige skins to silver and pewter (True Summer, Soft Summer).
- Olive skin: often looks great in both, which is why so many olive-skinned people feel they're "neutral". Muted olive tends to prefer antique and brushed finishes; clear olive with dark hair can carry polished silver (Deep Winter, True Winter) or antique gold (Deep Autumn).
- Deep skin: rich, substantial metals stand out beautifully. Warm deep skin suits antique gold, bronze and copper (Deep Autumn, True Autumn). Cool deep skin suits silver, platinum and gunmetal (Deep Winter, True Winter).

Can I wear both gold and silver?
Yes, in three situations:
- Your season lists a metal of the other color as working. Light Spring and Bright Spring can wear polished silver, Deep Winter and Bright Winter polished yellow gold, Soft Summer soft champagne gold, Soft Autumn pewter. Two-tone pieces (watches, mixed chains) bridge the two.
- The metal is small and away from the face. A ring or a watch matters much less than earrings and necklaces, which sit right next to your skin.
- You repeat it. Mixing looks intentional when both metals appear at least twice: a gold and silver ring stack plus a two-tone bracelet.
What doesn't work: a large piece of your skip metal right at the face, like statement earrings or a chunky necklace.

Warm seasons suit stones like citrine, amber, carnelian and tiger's eye; cool seasons suit sapphire, ruby, emerald and amethyst; soft seasons suit milky, smoky or opaque stones over clear, faceted ones.
Pearls work for most seasons when you match the tone: bright white for the Winters, cream or golden for the Autumns, soft rose or grey for the Summers, ivory for the Springs.
