How the Kibbe system works
Kibbe introduced the system in his 1987 book Metamorphosis. Each type, which he later called an Image ID, describes a combination of three things: your bone structure (including your vertical line, how tall you look), your body flesh (the shape of the soft tissue over the bones) and your facial features. Together they create a line, and the clothes that echo that line look like they belong to you.
Two ideas sit underneath everything:
- Yang is length, sharpness, angularity and width.
- Yin is softness, roundness, curves and small scale.
Five families describe the main ways yin and yang combine, and the modifiers shift each family toward one end. In his later teaching, Kibbe put the vertical line first and stopped assigning the pure, middle types (Natural, Classic, Gamine) as standalone IDs. We keep them on the map as reference points, clearly marked.
