Soft Natural Kibbe Body Type

Soft Natural is the Natural family's softest member: a frame with a little width and bluntness, carrying curves and softness. It is one of the most common Kibbe types, and one of the most often mistyped.

What is the Soft Natural Kibbe body type?

In David Kibbe's system, every type is a mix of yin (soft, rounded, small, curved) and yang (long, sharp, broad, straight). The Natural family is defined by a particular kind of yang: not sharp and narrow like the Dramatic, but blunt and slightly broad. Think of a frame with a little width at the shoulders or rib cage, slightly squared edges, and an easy, open look.

The Soft Natural is that blunt yang with a strong dose of yin on top. The bones give the Natural width; the flesh and features add curves, softness and warmth. The result is an image Kibbe describes in terms of freshness and sensuality: relaxed, friendly and warm rather than polished or severe.

That combination is why Soft Naturals look their best in clothes that have ease and softness at the same time: unconstructed shapes that do not cling to the frame, but still follow the waist.

Lines
Soft, relaxed and unconstructed, with the waist defined by drape, wrap or a soft belt.
Fabrics
Soft and fluid with some texture: jersey, washed silk, soft knits, modal, suede, soft denim.
Prints
Soft, blurred and organic: watercolor florals, loose botanicals, soft paisley, medium scale.
Accessories
Soft and organic, medium scale: hoops, layered chains, slouchy bags, ankle boots.
Hair
Soft and tousled: loose waves, curtain bangs, layers that move.

How to recognize a Soft Natural

Kibbe's later updates put the overall impression first, starting with the vertical line (how tall you look, not your height in inches). Soft Naturals are usually petite to moderate in height impression. If you look clearly elongated, Flamboyant Natural is the more likely Natural.

The frame

  • Shoulders slightly broad, squared or blunt, rarely sharp and rarely sloping
  • A frame with a little width, often noticed at the shoulders or the rib cage
  • Hands and feet medium or slightly wide rather than long and narrow

The body

  • Soft flesh and noticeable curves, at any weight
  • A waist that shows, even if the rib cage is not tiny
  • Weight tends to soften the whole body rather than collect in sharp blocks

The face

  • Open, slightly broad features, such as a wider nose or a wide smile
  • Softness in the cheeks and lips
  • Bones that are blunt rather than chiseled

None of this is about size. A Soft Natural can be very slim or very curvy. What stays the same is the line: a little width and bluntness under a soft surface.

Soft Natural vs Soft Classic, Romantic and Flamboyant Natural

These are the mix-ups that come up most in Kibbe communities.

Soft Natural vs Soft Classic

Both are moderate in height, both have softness. The difference is symmetry versus width. A Soft Classic is balanced and even: nothing broad, nothing blunt, everything in proportion. A Soft Natural has a little width or bluntness that a precise, symmetrical garment fights against.

A practical test: try a softly tailored sheath dress with set-in shoulders, then a relaxed jersey wrap dress. The Soft Classic looks polished in the sheath and a little sloppy in the wrap. The Soft Natural looks constrained in the sheath and right in the wrap.

Soft Natural vs Romantic

A Romantic is yin from head to toe: soft, rounded, with no width or bluntness in the bones. Romantics need fitted, curved, ornate clothes. Soft Naturals have curves too, but the frame underneath has width, so they need more ease and less ornamentation. Heavy lace and very fitted, detailed pieces tend to look costume-like on a Soft Natural.

Soft Natural vs Flamboyant Natural

Same family, different balance. A Flamboyant Natural adds vertical line and more yang: they look tall and can wear long, oversized, shapeless layers. Soft Naturals have less length and more softness, so oversized pieces need a waist and a softer scale, or they swallow them.

Clothing lines for Soft Naturals

The Soft Natural line is soft, relaxed and unconstructed, with the waist defined. Hold on to both halves of that sentence: ease, and a waist.

Tops and jackets

Drapey blouses, soft knits, wrap tops and fluid tees. Jackets should be unconstructed, with soft or slightly dropped shoulders, no stiff padding, and enough length to skim the hips. A soft blazer worn open, or belted, works far better than a sharp, nipped one.

Bottoms

Wide-leg or straight trousers in soft fabrics, relaxed jeans with a defined waistband, and skirts with movement: wrap skirts, softly flared midis, bias cuts. Very tight pencil skirts and stiff, flat-front tailored trousers tend to look rigid.

Dresses

Wrap dresses are the classic Soft Natural dress. Also look at soft shirt dresses with a belt, jersey dresses with ruching at the waist, and slip dresses layered with a soft cardigan.

Avoid

Fabrics and prints

Fabrics should move and soften. Matte jersey, washed silk, soft cotton, modal, fine and medium knits, soft suede and washed linen blends are all good. Stiff, heavy or very crisp fabrics, like rigid denim, starched poplin and thick structured wool, add hard edges a Soft Natural does not have.

A little texture is welcome, since texture is a Natural signature: a slubby knit, a soft bouclé, a crinkled cotton. Keep it soft rather than rugged.

For prints, think soft, blurred and organic: watercolor florals, loose botanicals, soft paisley, abstract brushstrokes with rounded edges. Medium scale is the safest. Sharp geometrics, tiny precise patterns and stark high-contrast graphics tend to fight the softness.

Accessories, shoes and hair

Accessories should be soft, organic and medium in scale: hoops, layered chains, hammered metal, smooth stones, slouchy leather bags. Very delicate pieces disappear; very sharp, geometric ones look severe.

Shoes follow the same idea: ankle boots, soft loafers, sandals, low block heels, rounded or almond toes. Very pointed stilettos can work for evening when the rest of the outfit is soft.

For hair, soft movement and a touch of undone texture: loose waves, layers, curtain bangs. Very sleek, sharp cuts and very structured updos usually look harder than the face.

Soft Natural celebrities

Celebrity examples help with the overall impression, but they are a weak way to type yourself: you see them styled, retouched and at their best angle.

Names commonly cited for Soft Natural in Kibbe communities and guides, not official typings. Celebrities are styled, photographed at flattering angles and often change weight and hair, so use them for the overall impression, never to type yourself.

Is Soft Natural your type?

If you recognized yourself in the blunt-but-soft description, and relaxed, waisted clothes have always felt right, you are probably in the right place. If you are torn between Soft Natural and a neighbor, the free Kibbe body type test shows your yin-yang balance section by section, and tells you your runner-up. The map of all 13 types shows where Soft Natural sits on the spectrum.

The best confirmation is always a try-on: take two outfits, one following the Soft Natural line and one following the line of your second guess, and photograph both in the same light.

Soft Natural: questions, answered

What is a Soft Natural in Kibbe?

Soft Natural is one of David Kibbe's 13 body types. It combines the Natural family's blunt, slightly broad yang frame with yin softness and curves in the flesh and features. Soft Naturals look best in relaxed, unconstructed clothes that still define the waist.

How tall are Soft Naturals?

Kibbe's types are about how tall you look rather than measured height, but Soft Naturals usually read petite to moderate. If you look clearly elongated, Flamboyant Natural is the more likely Natural type.

What is the difference between Soft Natural and Soft Classic?

Soft Classics are symmetrical and evenly balanced, so they suit softened tailoring. Soft Naturals have a little width or bluntness in the frame, so they need more ease: relaxed, drapey shapes with a defined waist.

Can a Soft Natural wear oversized clothes?

Yes, with a waist and a soft fabric. A long soft cardigan belted, or a relaxed shirt tucked into wide-leg trousers, works. Stiff, boxy, shapeless pieces tend to swallow a Soft Natural.

Are Soft Naturals always curvy?

No. Soft Naturals can be any size. What defines the type is the line: a slightly broad, blunt frame with soft flesh and features. A slim Soft Natural still has that softness and still looks best with some waist definition.
